Where Can You Put a Home Battery Without a Garage?

Garages aren't required

A lot of homeowners assume a battery needs a garage, but plenty of UK homes don't have one — and battery storage is still very much an option. The current safety guidance to follow is PAS 63100, the British Standards Institution's fire safety specification for domestic battery storage, and its core principle is simple: keep the battery out of the main living space wherever practical.

Option one: an external wall

The most common solution without a garage is mounting the battery on an external wall in a weatherproof, impact-rated enclosure. The main siting rules: at least 1 metre from any window, door, vent, or escape route, and at least 2 metres from anything flammable. It shouldn't compromise the wall's fire performance, and it needs to sit somewhere it won't flood.

Option two: a utility or plant room

If there's no suitable external wall, a dedicated utility or plant room can work instead, provided it has proper fire-resisting separation from sleeping areas and escape routes, ventilation to outside air, and interlinked smoke/heat detection.

What to avoid, regardless

Bedrooms, hallways, stairs, landings, and lofts are all off the table for battery storage under current guidance — no exceptions for convenience.
